In 1986, I took a prototype of Machine #1 to the World’s Fair (the theme being Transportation) in Vancouver, BC, in an attempt to break the world’s human-powered land speed record. In 1990, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered aired an attempt at Machine #2 becoming the world’s first human-powered helicopter to gain vertical lift. Both forays reminded me that, although Art & Engineering mixed back in Leonardo da Vinci’s day, it ultimately was more rewarding for me to focus on the bicycle as sculpture, and so I returned to the studio to expand these into a series.
